the blurb
shot from cape ealing on 10 feb 08 using the canon 400d and william optics zenithstar 66 (with 0.8 focal field reducer). Shutter Speed: 1/160 sec, ISO Speed 200.
in the third shot (at 200% zoom), the circular basin is the Mare Crisium (the sea of crises). this lava-filled impact crater is about 376 miles (605 km) in diameter and 4.55 to 3.85 billion years old. notwithstanding its size it is extremely smooth – the lava which flooded into the crater seems to have had a very low viscosity which meant that it was like a mill pond when it solidified.
Mare Crisium was the site of the russian Luna 15 crash in 1969 but 7 years later Luna 24 managed to bring back a soil sample (170g) from this region in August 1976.
above the mare crisium , is the large crater called Cleomedes.
